This is the first time this championship is being held at Hazeltine National and only the second time a women’s major championship is played in Minnesota.
It began on the golf course with two college friends and their sandal-covered feet.
Victoria native and University of Minnesota graduate Adam Iversen was back in Minnesota after traveling abroad, catching up with Matt Stang, a friend from a college business course, over a few rounds of golf. Both were wearing flip flops. “We thought it would be funny to create flip flops for the golf course,” Iversen says with a laugh.
With the arrival of summer comes the firing up of grills, the application of sunscreen and the return of avid golfers to their beloved pristine greens. Many local courses have spruced up in anticipation for the 2016 Ryder Cup, a biennial men’s golf competition between teams from the United States and Europe, which will be held at the Hazeltine National Golf Course in Chaska this September. Here’s your guide to golfing the southwest metro.
Back in 2008, Dan Malina was minding his own business one day when a young child got in harm’s way. Without thinking, he bent over to scoop the youngster to safety—and in so doing, did severe damage to his neck and back. For years he suffered through various therapies and medications, to little or no effect—a shame, since he’d moved to Bearpath in Eden Prairie just years before to enjoy golf, a game he couldn’t even finish anymore. “When I’d stand at the tee box, 80 percent of what was on my mind was, ‘Will I reinjure myself again?’” he says.
Even though it’s too late to get tickets to the 2016 Ryder Cup in Chaska through the Ryder Cup’s public lottery, there’s still a chance to see all four days of play. Premier Golf is offering travel packages to the popular event starting at $2,895 per person (for a double occupancy room). The packages include accommodations for four nights at a choice of seven area hotels, a welcome reception, a Ryder Cup gift, daily breakfast, tickets for all four competition days and round-trip transportation to and from Hazeltine National Golf Club. The competition is Sept. 27—Oct. 2 at Hazeltine.
