Elizabeth Contreras of Victoria opened The Smiling Olive in Chaska.
Fed up with driving long distances to get high-quality olive oil, Elizabeth Contreras of Victoria jumped on the olive oil and vinegar bar trend by opening The Smiling Olive in Chaska last spring.
The store features more than 50 varieties of olive oils along with white and dark balsamic vinegars, which are all available for customers to sample. They can be mixed to make marinades or salad dressings, but they also work alone. Dip bread into olive oil or perk up a plate of steamed veggies with a drizzle of oil or vinegar. Prices range from $5.50 for a 60 milliliter (about 2 ounces) bottle to $24 for 750 milliliters. The bottles of oil and vinegar can also be purchased as a part of gift sets.
Contreras, a native of Venezeula who moved to Minnesota in 2000, depends on the deep selection of olive oils when she’s making the Spanish paella, Mediterranean food and dishes inspired by her Latin American heritage.
