We breathe 26,000 times per day. So why not create a scent in your home that elicits positive feelings and happy memories? We’ve found some local products to help you kick off your journey to aromatic bliss.
With years of experience as a professional formulator of body and home care products, owner Teresa Andrys personally designs, tests and creates each product at Sunleaf Naturals in Waconia. “Natural scents are a perfect way to personalize your living space,” Andrys says. “Involving the sense of smell in decorating your home creates a richer daily living experience.”
When selecting scents for their homes, Andrys says people are often inspired by the season. In the spring and summer, Amyris Bergamot—an uplifting citrus blend—and LemonVetiver—fresh lemon complemented with vetiver and patchouli—are customer favorites. Sunleaf Naturals products include reed diffusers, essential oil blends, candles and body care products.
At Blossom Essentials in Eden Prairie, each product has an aroma derived from essential oils that owner Stephanie Kurtz blends together with purpose. Taking a variety of forms, you might use them as body oils, burn them in a burner, diffuse or clean with them. “Aromas are nearly impossible to describe,” Kurtz says. “They wind their way through areas of the brain, stimulating memory and emotion before you have conscious awareness of the scent.”
When choosing a scent, Kurtz asks people what they want others to remember about their home. For confidence, use jasmine, grapefruit, orange, and rosemary. For happiness and peace, use bergamot, neroli, sandalwood, and geranium. For fresh and clean, use lime, lemon, and peppermint.
Kurtz says her most popular aroma is the anti-viral blend—a bit spicy and a little earthy, with clove and lavender. “People love it. And to our amazement, bugs hate it.” she says. “It’s a win-win for everyone.”
Local aromatherapy expert Kris James believes scents and fragrances play a large part in creating a home. “Think of walking into the kitchen and inhaling the aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg,” she says. “It evokes memories of childhood, making apple pie with your mom at the holidays.”
James sells her own line of aromatherapy products—including pillow spray to help you get a restful night’s sleep, and rejuvenating facial mist—at Unearthed Arts in Waconia.
Some of her most popular scents include “Off to Dreamland” pillow spray and “Joyous Heart,” a room and bedding spray that uses mood-lifting citrus essential oils. James also plans to teach an aromatherapy class at Unearthed Arts this spring.
Owners of rareEarth Naturals Sherri Jobelius and Brian Paulsen of Chanhassen, source essential oils from all over the world. “The beauty of essential oils is that they have properties that are shown to increase mental clarity and concentration—and even help you relax,” says Emily Tucker of rareEarth Essentials.
Try the “Hope” blend, with fir balsam, spruce, and pine needle essences to create a calming atmosphere and reduce stress, or the “Awaken” aroma with sweet orange, grapefruit, and black pepper to create a more energizing and lively home. With products that are 100-percent natural and handcrafted in Minneapolis, you can find your favorite scent in a variety of forms, like perfumes, candles, diffusers, essential oils and room mists.
Wyndermere Naturals uses 100 percent pure, single note essential oils and synergistic blends to create all its products, from air freshener and hand soaps to bath salts and lotions.
Which scents should you try first? The Minnetonka-based company’s top essential oils include French lavender, peppermint, tea tree, and a variety of citrus aromas.
