Photo Contest Winner: Lisa Tomassen’s Waiting for the Rain

Eden Prairie’s Lisa Tomassen shows the bright spot in a rainstorm.

Lisa Tomassen is an Eden Prairie mom and marketing communications specialist
whose dabblings in photography often result in something fantastic, but she
insists that it’s all about being fortunate enough to capture the wonder in
everyday moments.

Tomassen’s photos tend to focus on single moments that make for great
memories. “You’re capturing that moment of beauty and shared experiences.
Pictures should bring you back to the moment they were taken, and I find a lot
of joy in those little moments,” she says. In this case, it was a July day spent
as a family, hiding from the rainy skies outside. “I just got really lucky,” she
explains of her photo, Waiting for the Rain.

The photo features her grinning then-8-month-old son Jaxon through a
downstairs window spattered with raindrops; he was watching his dad grill
outside on the deck and was grinning, Tomassen suggests, because he thought that
was funny. “I love photographing children,” she says. “They see the world with
such wonder.”

And as Tomassen snapped photos of her son from a variety of different angles
with her Canon Rebel, Jaxon looked up with big eyes to create the perfect
frame.
