Photo Contest Winner: Craig Eiler’s “This Road Leads to Hope”

Craig Eiler’s photo showcases the serene and rustic landscape of the southwest metro.
The Zoar Moravian Church in Waconia.

The Zoar Moravian Church was erected in 1863, east of Waconia in Laketown Township, and has since become a landmark in the community. Though it is without heat or plumbing, the Waconia Moravian Church congregation maintains the church’s rustic identity and still uses it to this day.

Published photographer Craig Eiler says the structure’s simplicity is what initially struck him. “It’s kind of in the middle of nowhere,” he says. “Even with the chapel it’s small; really calm and quaint.”

Eiler, who lives in Eden Prairie, has shot editorial, fine art and portrait photography, but claims landscapes are his favorite. “This Road Leads to Hope” was one of many shots taken that day, after he decided that a straight-on shot appealed to him the most. “The sunlight and clouds were just right…the old architecture has a warm, welcoming feeling. The title came pretty naturally,” he says.

The Zoar Moravian Church is located east of Waconia at 8265 County Road 10 for those curious to see this landmark.

This photo won first place in the Landmarks category of our annual photo contest. We’ll collect entries for this year’s contest beginning in August.
