Warm up with a little race fever. The Hypothermic 1/2 Marathon is set for 9 a.m. on February 17 at 13001 Technology Drive, Eden Prairie. Each registrant will receive a commemorative Hypothermic Half package courtesy of the Running Room. Additionally, all participates are eligible for a finisher’s medal and a complimentary brunch, ideal for refueling after the event. Until February 15, registration is $65 for the run/walk, and additional brunch tickets are $15. Race materials can be picked up from 4-8 p.m. February 15 and from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Febuary 16 at the Mall of America Running Room. If you’ve had to hang up your running shoes for whatever reason and still want to participate, volunteers are welcome to assist during race day. Many positions on and off the course are available. Similar races are held from January through March throughout Canada and the United States, with only Eden Prairie and Rochester, MN, representing the U.S. Tips for cold-weather running, supplied by the Running Room, include: wear three layers; keep all extremities covered; wear a balaclava or toque on your head to keep warm; wear ice grips over the soles of your shoes for greater traction; mittens are warmer than gloves; wear a single pair of thermal socks; use ChapStick on your nose, ears and lips; petroleum jelly is good to keep hands warm; and tuck a water bottle under your jacket to keep it from freezing.
