Candlelit Ski at Lake Minnewashta

Spend a winter evening gliding along the snowy terrain of Lake Minnewashta Regional Park on a pair of cross-country skis as candles light your way. For those who would rather skip out on the skiing, a bonfire with hot cider and s’mores will be available for another form of winter fun. $4 per person or $15 per family, additional $5 equipment rental fee for adults and $4 for children.  952.466.5250.

Beginner Snowshoeing

If skiing and snowboarding are getting old this winter, head out to Gale Woods Farm and give snowshoeing a shot. It’s a fun, unique winter sport, and this novice session features a hike led by a Three Rivers Parks guide through the scenic park to take in all of the snowy nature views. Reservations required. 763.559.6709.

Bowling and Golf … On Ice!

Bowling and golf both get a fun winter twist at this Lowry Nature Center event. Stop by to practice your putting on a mini-golf course complete with tunnels, obstacles, and holes right in the ice, and forget all you know about friction when you try ice bowling. A hot fire and cup of cocoa will be ready and waiting to warm you up after your winter fun. 763.694.7650.

Polar Bear Picnic

Take the family out to the Lowry Nature Center in the Carver Park Reserve for a full afternoon of winter fun. The Polar Bear Picnic celebrates all the outdoor activities offered at the Lowry Center that make winter great, from snowshoeing and ice mini-golf to kick-sledding and building snow forts. 763.694.7650.

Soggy Bottom Open

Get ready to have a little cold-weather golfing fun at the fifth annual Soggy Bottom Open at Riverside Park. Smack tennis balls through soft snowdrifts at this Carver Lions Club fundraiser—anything from five-irons to hockey sticks to baseball bats goes. Ages 12+; children younger than 17 must be accompanied by a guardian.

Midwest Vintage Snowmobile Show

Got a need for speed? Head out to Waconia for the world’s largest vintage and antique snowmobile event, featuring a snowmobile show, drag racing, trail ride, silent auction and more. It’s sure to be a blast for all the “sled heads” who attend. $10–$20. 8 a.m. Lake Waconia; 651.649.4688; mwvss.com

Rock on Ice

Keep warm as you skate and groove to the beats of old-time rock ’n’ roll tunes. If you do start to get chilly, make a stop at the bonfire for refreshments—did someone say “s’mores?” Be sure to bring your own skates; rental is not available. 952.949.8449.

Winter in Motion

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t give you an excuse to sit on the couch. Stay warm outside as you get in a workout that takes advantage of snow and ice—rather than being hindered by them. Come dressed to slip and stomp around as you celebrate winter activities. 763.694.7676.

Winter Nature Photography and Hike

Bring your own camera or borrow one from the Lowry Nature Center for a special winter trek where you’ll “take only pictures and leave only footprints.” Learn the basics of winter digital photography as you go on a hike led by a naturalist guide. 763.694.7650.
