Deb Zeller’s “Stormy Skies” won third place in the nature category of our 2012 photo contest.

Calling all photographers: Now is the time for recognition. Southwest Metro Magazine is collecting entries August 1-31 for our third annual photo contest, and your picture could be the one to take the prize. We welcome your pictures and stories from 2013, and in return we offer helpful advice for success from photo contest veteran Deb Zeller, who has a knack for capturing the perfect shot. Zeller, a resident of Victoria, describes her method as a blend of patience and madness. For her shot, Stormy Skies, she sat on the dock of Hay Lake for over an hour, and captured close to 200 shots. “Everyone else thought I was nuts,” she says of her stormy stakeout.Zeller also advises photographers to shoot often, and keep a camera on hand at all times. “I carry my camera with me so much that it gets heavy,” she says of toting her digital Nikon D7000. This enables her to capture a landscape wherever she goes and never miss another perfect storm.– Entrants must live, work or attend school in Chanhassen, Chaska, Eden Prairie, Victoria or Waconia. – Photos must be taken in the community from September 1, 2012, to August 31, 2013. – Participants must have permission from anyone pictured in the photo and permission of a parent in the case of minors to use the photo. – Photographers may submit up to five photos, but no more than three in any one category: People and Families, Wildlife and Nature, Activities and Events, City Landmarks, and Pets.
