A Dog Like Any Other

With responsible owners, pit bulls can be family-friendly pups.

I will spare you the unthinkable details of my rescued American Pit Bull Terrier’s first three years of life because I’ve learned that what Prim’s previous human asked her to do doesn’t define her present or her future. She has been with us almost three years, and she isn’t required to trust me, let alone to love me. But she does, and she is now the loving, loyal dog she was born to be.

October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month, designed to change perceptions and stereotypes about pit bulls and their responsible owners. By sharing our positive stories of raising pit bulls, we hope to negate the fear and bias surrounding the breed. Instead of passing judgment on a breed, pay attention to the humans shaping the dog. Dogs learn from us and adapt their behavior accordingly.
