The Säjai Foundation Raises Wise Kids

Local youth gain the keys to good health: wisdom and empowerment.

Childhood obesity is much more than a buzz topic for The Säjai Foundation – it’s a call to action. Since 2007, the organization has been bringing its Wise Kids® curriculum to after-school programs, summer camps and other centers nationwide in order to encourage children to become “sage” and to gain wisdom about healthy food choices, active lifestyles and—in this age of sitting on the playground and texting instead of playing a game of kickball—encouraging them to engage in the outdoors and all it has to offer.

In the June issue of Southwest Metro Magazine (available June 1 at, we sit down with The Säjai Foundation’s CEO/President Melissa Hanson (a Maple Grove mother of three) and the organization’s communications coordinator, Amy Rea (mother of two boys from Eden Prairie), to talk about the vision of Barb King, who founded Säjai before her death in 2008. Her vision has already impacted the lives of many kids ages 6-11 around the country, empowering them to travel down the path of good health at the dinner table and on the playground.

The foundation’s second annual Amazing Walk! is September 29 at North Mississippi Regional Park in Minneapolis. Check out The Sajai Foundation’s website for more info.
