The Big Spiel Draws Curlers from Around the World to Twin Cities

The Big Spiel is the Twin Cities Curling Association's annual bonspiel, and it draws hundreds of curlers from around the world.

For the sixth year, the Twin Cities Curling Association (TCCA) is welcoming more than 380 curlers and 96 teams from around the world to participate in its annual bonspiel—a weekend-long curling tournament it dubbed The Big Spiel.

During January 9–12, curlers will compete around the Twin Cities. The events take place at four curling centers, including St. Paul Curling Club, Frogtown Curling Club, Four Seasons Curling Club (located at Fogerty Arena) and Chaska Curling Center. (The Dakota Curling Club is part of the TCCA, but it isn’t hosting this particular event this year.) Viewers can expect plenty of action on the ice—from morning until evening.

“The spiel [has become] a ‘bucket list’ spiel for curlers around the world,” says Mark Willmert of TCCA. “We’ve had teams from several countries, [including] Canada, certainly ever year, but also Scotland and Ireland.” Willmert adds, “What [is a] better way to raise funds to help foster the sport of curling … other than throw the biggest spiel in the country and showcase the Twin Cities venues to the rest of the curling world?”

Prior to the event, visit the Curling Zone’s website for the draw, live scoring and event list.

Since the addition of the Chaska Curling Center, Willmert says it’s made more ice available to this area and has welcomed curlers of all ages—some who even participate in The Big Spiel. But for people who are interested in learning the sport of curling, Willmert recommends attending one of the clubs’ Learn to Curl events.
