This stunning monarch was a regular visitor at the Russell residence in Eden Prairie before becoming the subject of this photo. “One spring I noticed this monarch butterfly spending quite a bit of time in my lilac shrub, just outside the door,” says Jody Russell. She hustled inside to grab her camera, hoping the winged creature wouldn’t fly away. When Russell returned with her Nikon and a 300mm lens, she caught the butterfly in action. “Up until this day, butterflies had seemed to be just beautiful colors and fragile filaments. But seeing the butterfly feed through what looks like a straw, I saw it more as the insect it is,” Russell says. She enjoys combining her photography with the wonders of nature, calling moments like these “pretty cool.”
