We all know that reading to young children is good for them—proper exposure to literacy at a young age boosts communication, speech and logic skills.
But it’s also fun—especially at the annual “Hooked on Books…and the Arts, too” event. Eastern Carver County Schools Community Education and the Carver County Library co-host the 10th anniversary of the Hooked on Books event on February 21 at Chanhassen High School.
This year, the event will feature Minnesota native, author and illustrator Derek Anderson. Anderson is the mastermind behind the images of several award-winning children’s books, including Waking Dragons, Hot Rod Hamster and Little Quack. Throughout the event, Anderson will speak, sign books and participate in various projects. “It’s really a community-wide celebration to support literacy and the arts in our community,” explains Lori Kendall, community education marketing manager.
Organizers aim to inspire children to use their imagination and creativity in art and literature. The event is focused on preschool and elementary-aged kids, however all community members are welcome to stop by to share in the love for literacy (they’ve had more than 2,300 visitors in past years).
