Words to Grow On

Let’s get started planting trees with tips from the Mustard Seed Landscaping & Garden Center.

Tree selection
Choose the right type and size of tree for your yard, and don’t be afraid to ask for advice from your local garden center.

Proper planting
Avoid planting the tree too deep as its roots could circle around itself, causing the tree to die. Plant the tree with the soil level in the pot at the same soil level in your yard, or have the tree sit slightly higher for improved drainage. Do not forget to add compost and fertilizer to the soil.

Mulch for protection
Adding a ring of mulch around trees has multiple benefits. It keeps the soil moist for the trees, suppresses weed growth and keeps the weed whip string from damaging the tree’s bark.

Water is key
Too much water is just as harmful as too little water. Since every site differs in its soil structure and sun exposure, it is best to feel the soil moisture level down a couple inches and determine if water is needed.

Pruning for health
Proper pruning helps with the health and longevity of a tree.  Pruning techniques help select the healthiest shape of a tree, making it strong to withstand wind, fruit load, insects and diseases.
