Southwest Metro Photo Contest: Waiting for Spring

Waiting for Spring placed first in the Activities and Events category for our annual photo contest.

A brisk but calm day in February 2019 drew Marguerite Slavik out of her Eden Prairie home and onto Red Rock Lake for a morning walk (crampons in tow!). “The canoe caught my eye since it was the only pop of color on the horizon,” Slavik says. “It drew me in, and I walked across the lake to take the shot.”

The result was Waiting for Spring, which placed first in the Activities and Events category for our annual photo contest. “I like how the bold red canoe stands out against the muted tones of its surroundings, as though it’s making a statement, such as, ‘I’m tired of winter and waiting for spring,’” Slavik says.

Since caution is always the order of the day when it comes to walking on lake ice, Slavik didn’t care to risk taking her DSLR camera with her on the walk, so the photo was taken with an iPhone.
