Photo Contest Winner: Winter Bath by Thor Hansen

A trio of house finches makes a pit stop in Thor Hansen’s Eden Prairie backyard.

Eden Prairie art teacher Thor Hansen, who captured this shot in his backyard last winter, has been sharing his passion for photography with the students at Eden Lake Elementary for 27 years. He began taking photos when he was in third grade with his Kodak Instamatic. He purchased his first SLR camera in seventh grade and enrolled in a community college photography course. His interest in photography inspired a life-long hobby and some professional work.

Hansen enjoys shooting nature and landscapes, and that affinity shines through in “Winter Bath,” which Hansen submitted to our annual photo contest. “This photo was taken on my back deck birdbath, overlooking the woods,” he says. “I noticed several birds were visiting the birdbath on this particular day, so I decided to try and capture their winter bath. This trio of house finches caught my attention as one splashed playfully while the other two anxiously awaited their turn.”
