Exhibiting Artists: Mary Bergherr and Laura Wennstrom

June 30 - August 11, 2017
Opening Reception: Friday, June 30, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Artist Talk: Tuesday July 25, 7:00 p.m.

Artists Mary Bergherr and Laura Wennstrom both use bold
colors, shapes, and composed structure to express their individual voices and
achieve their respective art goals.

In her art-making process, artist Laura Wennstrom is
interested in gathering materials and objects – the cast off, the forgotten,
the incidental, the profound – and through combining and layering, finding new
ways to tell stories. Wennstrom’s work represents the intersection of her life
with the people she encounters while honoring their experiences and trying to
make sense of her own.

For Mary Bergherr the act of painting is a journey of
self-discovery. With every color, shape, mark, letter or word she makes, she
better understands her true self.  At the same time, she enjoys and
responds to the life’s often conflicting dualities and contrasts, and in the
process of creating she hopes to better understand and feel more connected to
humanity.

About the Artists:

Mary Bergherr grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota and
received her B.A. from The Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1982. After
feeling limited by her work as a freelance illustrator, Bergherr took time off
to focus on fine art in 2003. She was greatly influenced by her children’s art
process and African-American folk art from the South. Bergherr uses acrylic
paint and colored pencil on repurposed wood to create colorful works that
express her inner child. When not in her studio, she is walking her two dogs,
cooking, eating, wanting more dogs, or worrying. Her work can be seen in
galleries and collections throughout the country. She currently resides in
Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Laura Wennstrom is currently an Adjunct Professor and
the Art and Design Department Office Coordinator at Bethel University in St.
Paul, Minnesota She holds an MFA in New Media from the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign (2015), and received her undergraduate degree in Studio Art
from North Park University in Chicago in 2009. She is also the
Artist-in-Residence at Calvary Baptist Church in Minneapolis, where she has a
studio space and runs a gallery in the historic building. Although Laura
is currently teaching university students, she has worked extensively with children
in underserved neighborhoods across the Midwest teaching art, reading, and
special education. She has developed and implemented art curriculum for after
school and summer programs for students of all ages.
