Kids in the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s Urban Garden Program enjoyed a summer filled with planting, weeding, composting and harvesting. And of course no garden experience is complete without a little taste-testing. As the groups gear up for fall, they’ve been enjoying a snack in the garden that’s both seasonal and fun: Apple Pie in a Cup. Try it out for yourself, then check out the rest of the Urban Garden Program story in the September issue of Southwest Metro Magazine, available Sept.

Mark Halla from The Mustard Seed is excited about gardening–and education. That’s why he’s teamed up with area schools to welcome school groups through his garden and landscape business in Chaska. Students explore many areas of gardening and science while on their tour, but one of the highlights is the bee hives.

Here’s some fun facts Halla likes to share with the kids:

-  A honeybee can fly approximately 15 miles per hour

Imagine learning math, science, and chemistry all while making bread or your favorite culinary dish. How about while growing and studying flowers or trees or plants? Or through sculpture, drawing, painting, interior design, graphic design, or furniture design, just to name a few.

There are people in life who, as a pastor from my old church used to say, “carry their own set of lights.” They are illuminated from within and needn’t have anything other than their own greatness to make them shine. Eden Prairie High School graduate and Stanford University freshman Brandon Hill is one of those people.

A young man who writes with such passion, such clarity, such intellect, that I am reminded of my own foibles and shortcomings.

Mitch Chepokas has done more good for kids and families than he will ever know.  The generous spirit of the 9-year-old Chanhassen boy, who died in 2003 after a battle with cancer, lives on in the good works and heartfelt efforts of those who knew him and those who did not.

The Miracles of Mitch Foundation raises money for families who have a sick child and are struggling to pay bills – an idea based on a “pinky swear” that Mitch asked of his dad, Steve, before his death.

It’s a dog’s life (and definitely a cat’s life), but that doesn’t mean your favorite four-legged friend couldn’t use an extra dose of fun every now and then. In the June issue of Southwest Metro Magazine, we’ve dug up some great ideas for ways to treat your pet to new experiences: a new indoor dog park, some delicious dog treats made by a special group of Chaska High School students, pet portrait sessions, deluxe boarding facilities and day care (with or without swimming pools).
