recommended by Emily Lloyd

Fascinating historical fiction centered on an African-American teen that dreams of becoming a pilot, and ends up training to be a Women’s Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) in WWII. To do so, she has to pretend to be white. Compelling details about what it feels like to have to “pass,” as well as about how women were treated in the Air Force at the time.

Revolution

by Jennifer Donnelly

recommended by Sarah Garbis

In this heart-wrenching story, a contemporary storyline is paired with a historical twist. Grieving the loss of her younger brother and flunking out of prep school, 17-year-old Andi is forced to travel with her father to Paris where she discovers the diary of another girl written during the French Revolution. A gripping and well researched historical jaunt. —recommendations from librarians at the Hennepin County Library–Eden Prairie
